Travel information
From Janapar
The only way to get to Karabakh is by road from Armenia. For information on getting to Armenia, see:
When in Yerevan (Armenia), you can take a van (locally called a Marshutni/Marshutka) to Stepanakert for about $20, a shared taxi for a little more, or your own cab for about $100. These all depart pretty regularly all morning from the Kilikia Avtokayaran (Bus Station) in Yerevan. They all go via Goris/Lachin/Shushi into Stepanakert. The road is windy at parts, so if you're sensitive, claim your seat as close to the front as possible. The seat (or two) next to the driver in a Marshutni is the prize.
Within Karabakh, there are Marshutnis from the towns/villages to Stepanakert and back, but the schedules vary wildly.
Warning about private taxi prices
Taxis throughout Armenia and Karabakh run about 100 to 120 drams (about 30 US cents) per kilometer. Never more. Never ever more. If a taxi driver tries to convince you otherwise, insist - I repeat - INSIST on speaking to the "Police". They will understand this word. You will get your correct price. Just pay attention to the mileage, and be firm if anyone tries to cheat you. While this is the exception, an occasional wild price can fluster someone on unfamiliar turf, so don't be flustered and don't believe ANYTHING they say, and insist and wait for police. While it is extremely doubtful the driver will continue to insist if you insist on speaking to police, the police will definitely help you.
