Mataghis

Mataghis Village (Մատաղիս), in Martakert Region is the gateway to Yeghishe Araykel Monastery, the Forbidden Monastery of Yerits Mankants, and Jraberd Fortress.

It is best to reach this area by car/taxi. The area is highly militarized and wandering off the road to the village on foot can be very dangerous. Upon reaching Mataghis, it is safe to walk to the prescribed places.

According to legend Mataghis had 800 houses. In the north-eastern part of the village up to the end of the 1800s you could find a “half-destroyed chapel, ruins of a bridge and large khachkars”.
