Karintak (Քարինտակ) is a village located in the Shushi Region.

The village’s population is slowly declining, as the younger generation cannot find employment. Nevertheless I was able to find two home stays. I’ve stayed there for 14 days, although it was too much time spent finding home stays, because of the low population and poor housing conditions.

Our first home stay family which I lived during those days are the Arushanian family. They have a big and nice house with two separate bedrooms for guests. The toilet is outdoors and has been renovated. They have a bathroom with a shower. The mother of the family Ms. Donara is the head of the family and is a nice woman. She makes delicious food and jams. The son of Ms. Donara, Mkhitar is the Mayor of the village. He is such a nice and polite person. He is married and has a son.

The other home stay family I chose unfortunately was leaving for Stepanakert for the holidays. Therefore I had no time to stay in their house and connect with them. Even so they have 5-6 beds for our hikers, the same as the Arushanian’s.

The village does not have a functioning church, so the villagers go to Shoushi for mass on Sunday.

Under the vertical cliffs of Shushi, several hundred meters below is the village of Karintak and further downriver are the ruins of Hunot, famous for their caves (Avana-karan, Meliki-karan, Honoti-karan, Alexana Khuzun-karan, Mosunts-karan, Ilkhhol) for over 200 mills, the rocky palace of the prince, the castle of Avan Haryurapet, the one-span bridge in Hunot (1720), which have considerably strengthened the defenses of Shushi, and have generally played an important role in the life of that town.

Southeast of Karintak stretches the high mountain-ridge Kirs. On its slopes, joining the village, are a number of ancient settlements, cemeteries, half-destroyed churches, monuments and khachkars. The beautifully- ornamented khachkar of XIIIc is quite interesting in the area of Pulur-art (round field). Khachkars are also found in the areas of Khachin-aghbyur, Okhni-aghbyur and Tsort-aghbyur. These monuments are reminders of once prosperous settlements.

The parish church of village Karintak was founded in 1816 in the place of previously existing chapel. This common vaulted hall is built from beaten stone. In bad condition at the end of the atheist Soviet period and after the war, this church was restored by the Land and Culture Organization in the late 1990s. An analogous church is situated in village Honut.

Hiking down-river from Karintak for an hour there is a beautiful mossy waterfall.

History

During the Karabakh war, this Armenian village was subjected to frequent attacks from Shushi, which is virtually vertically above them. They sent the women and children away and fought until they played a crucial role in scaling the cliffs and capturing Shushi on May 9, 1992.
